Bandgeschichte
Bright Eyes ist keine Band im herkömmlichen Sinne, sondern beginnt als Soloprojekt des Songwriters Conor Oberst. Dieser schreibt seit seinem 16. Lebensjahr Songs unter dem Namen Bright Eyes, die er auf Alben und Bühnen mit der Hilfe ständig wechselnder Musiker umzusetzen pflegt. Die einzige musikalische Konstante neben Conor Oberst ist dessen Produzent und Multiinstrumentalist Mike Mogis, in den letzten Jahren darf auch Nate Walcott hinzugefügt werden. Zu dem großen Kreis der Conor Oberst im Studio und live aushelfenden Musiker zählen u.a. Maria Taylor und Orenda Fink (Azure Ray), Andy LeMaster (Now it's Overhead), Todd Baechle-Fink (The Faint), Nick Zinner (Yeah Yeah Yeahs), Tim Kasher (Cursive, The Good Life), Neely Jenkins (Tilly and the Wall) und Jenns Lewis, Blake Sennett und Jason Boesel von Rilo Kiley.
Der am 15. Februar 1980 geborene Oberst ("einen Tag zu spät für die Liebe", wie der Musiker in Anspielung auf den vorausgehenden Valentinstag einst meinte) veröffentlichte 1997 eine Sammlung zwischen 1995 und 1997 entstandener Songs auf dem von Freunden gegründeten Label Saddle Creek. Im selben Jahr erschien auch das erste richtige Album "Letting of the Happiness", zwei Jahre später folgte "Fevers and Mirrors". Internationale Bekanntheit erlangte Oberst 2002 mit "Lifted or the Story is in the soil keep your ear do the ground", der große Durchbruch gelang ihm schließlich 2005, als zeitgleich die Alben "I'm wide awake it's morning" und "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" erschienen, deren erste Singles Lua und Take It Easy (Love Nothing) in den USA die Spitze der verkaufszahlentechnisch recht unbedeutenden Hot 100 Singles-Charts mit Platz 1 und 2 belegen konnten.
Anfang April 2007 erscheint das Album "Cassadaga" in Europa auf Polydor. Bright Eyes präsentieren sich seit diesem Zeitpunkt als Band in der Öffentlichkeit. Die Mitglieder: Conor Oberst, Mike Mogis und Nate Walcott. In darauffolgenden beiden Jahren folgen zwei Alben, die Conor Oberst zusammen mit der The Mystic Valley Band einspielt. und unter seinem eigenen Namen veröffentlicht.
Nach der Wiederveröffentlichung von One Jug of Wine, Two Vessels, einer Split-Single mit Neva Dinova von 2004, brachten Bright Eyes 2010 ein neues Stück namens Coyote Song heraus. Das Lied wird im Rahmen des Projekts The Sound Strike veröffentlicht, welches eine Organisation verschiedener Musiker ist, die den Staat Arizona boykottieren, nachdem dieser ein Gesetz eingeführt hat, welches die Vertreibung illegaler Einwanderer aus Arizona erleichtert.[1]
Für 2011 ist das 7. Bright-Eyes-Album mit dem Titel The People's Key angekündigt. Es wird Gastauftritte von Musikern der Bands Cursive, The Faint und Mynabirds enthalten und wieder von Mike Mogis produziert.[2] Ein erster Song mit dem Titel 'Shell Games wurde vorab als Gratis-Download veröffentlicht.[3]
