Devendra Banhart ist ein amerikanischer Psych-Folk-Künstler.

Biographie
Devendra Banhart genoss eine künstlerische Ausbildung im „San Fransisco Art Institute“. Daraufhin begann er limerickartige Texte zu schreiben (z.B.: „There once was a man who really loved salt / So he tied his nose to the sea / And then God came down from his silver throne / And said, 'Honey, that water ain't free'.“). Um seine Karriere nach vorne zu bringen, spielte er überall, sei es ein äthiopisches Restaurant, ein Irish Pub oder Du Nord's Weekly „Monday Night Hoot“. Im Jahre 2000 verließ er das „San Fransisco Art Institute“ um nach Paris zu ziehen. Dort begann er in Clubs als Vorgruppe einiger Indierockbands zu spielen. Zu dieser Zeit nahm er selbstgeschriebene Lieder auf Anrufbeantwortern seiner Freunde und einem Vier-Spur-Recorder auf. Jedoch zog er im selben Jahr wieder zurück in die USA, wo er von einem Freund des Young-God-Records-Besitzers Michael Gira beim Soundcheck gehört wurde und daraufhin sofort einen Plattenvertrag bekam.
